Go to … / go on … / go for … / go –ing

We use «go to … » to indicate where we go (in which direction we move and what is our final destination).

They are going to Germany in a week.
They are going to Germany in a week.
Where is James? – He’s gone to work.

We say «go to sleep» meaning «start to sleep».

He was so excited that he couldn’t go to sleep.

Remember that we say «go home» (without to).

It’s time to go home.

We say «go on …» in a number of expressions:

an excursion

a cruise

strike

They are going on an all-inclusive package tour of Austria.
She used all her savings to go on a world cruise.
The low-paid workers went on strike.

We say «go for …» in a number of expressions:

go for

a walk

a run

a swim

an drink

a meal

a holiday

She got up early and went for a swim.
We often go for a drink on a Friday night.
Let’s go out for a meal.

We use go + -ing for sports (swimming / skating etc.) and also shopping.

Jill and I are going shopping in the afternoon.
They go skiing in the Alps every winter.
