Both / neither / all / none

We use both / either / neither to talk about TWO things or people.

Употребление Both

I have an apple and a banana. You can have both. (an apple and a banana)

Either

Would you like an apple or a banana? You can have either. (an apple or a banana)

Употребление Neither

Would you like an apple or a banana? – Neither. I don’t like fruit. (nothing)

Both has a positive meaning and is followed by a plural verb.

Both children / Both of the children / Both of them are good at mathematics.

Neither has a negative meaning and is followed by a singular or plural verb in the affirmative.

Neither game is good for children.
Neither of the games / Neither of them is / are good for children.

BOTH +

(the +) plural noun

of the / these / my / your, etc. + plural noun

of us / them, etc. + are

EITHER / NEITHER +

singular noun + is

of the / these / my / your, etc. + plural noun

of us / them, etc. + is / are

We use both / either / neither + noun.

Last year we went to Berlin and Potsdam. We liked both cities very much.
There two ways home from here. We can go either way.
After university I worked in a bank and later in an insurance company. Neither job was interesting.

We say both of them / neither of us etc.

Jack has got two brothers. Both of them are single.
Michael and Richard rarely go out. Neither of them has much free time.
Who are the people in the picture? I don’t know either of them.

We also say both of… / either of… / neither of…

Neither of my parents speaks a foreign language.
I haven’t seen either of these films.

We can say both (of) the… / both (of) those… / both (of) my… etc. (with or without of)

I like both of those dresses. I can’t decide which to buy.
I like both those dresses. I can’t decide which to buy.

Both of Jill’s brothers work full-time.
Both Jill’s brothers work full-time. 

We use all and none to talk about MORE THAN TWO things or people.

All has a positive meaning and is followed by a plural verb.

All the employees / All of the employees / All of them have received additional training.

None has a negative meaning and is followed by a singular or plural verb in the affirmative.

None of these trains is / are fast.

ALL +

(the +) plural noun

(of) the / these / my / your, etc. + plural noun

of us / them, etc. + are

NONE +

of the / these / my / your, etc. + plural noun

of us / them, etc. + is / are

We say all the… / all my … etc. (usually without of).

All the students in our class passed the exam successfully.
All my friends share my musical interests.

None of my friends live near here.
How many of these books have you read? – None of them.

Position of Both and All in the sentence

Both / all can go:

after the verb to be

after the auxiliary verb but before the main verb
