We use there is / there are in the following way:

We use “there is” for one item (singular nouns)


We use “there are” for a number of items (plural nouns)

We use “there is” for non-count items (non-count nouns)

There is a bird in the tree. – a bird – singular noun
There is some water in the jug. – water – non-count noun
There are some birds in the tree. – birds – plural noun

Remember that we use «There…» when we mention something for the first time and say that it exists. However, when we continue talking about the same thing, giving details about this item, we use «It…».
