Get

We use get when we mean «receive / buy / fetch / find».

you don’t have something → you get it → you have it

– Did you get my message?
– Yes, I got it in the morning. (=receive)

I like your shoes. Where did you get them? (=buy)
I’m broke. I need to get a job as soon as possible. (=find)

We similarly say get a bus / get a train / get a taxi (=take a bus / train / taxi).

– Did you come here on foot?
– No, I got a taxi.

 

We use get + adjective (get hungry / get cold / get tired etc.) meaning «become».

you are not cold → you get cold → you are cold

Eat your soup. It’s getting cold.
I’m sorry your father is ill. I hope he gets better soon.
She worked hard all day and got extremely tired.

My sister is getting married next month.
We didn’t take the map and got lost in the forest.

We say get to a place meaning «arrive». But remember get home (without to).

I usually get to work at about 9 o’clock.
The train gets to Manchester at 2.30 p.m.
I had to work overtime yesterday, so I got home very late.

We use get in / out / on / off speaking about various means of transport.

get in (a car)
get out (of a car)
get on (a bus / a train / a plane)
get off (a bus / a train / a plane)

They got in the car and drove away.
She waved goodbye to her parents and got on the train.
They got out of the car and went into the hotel building.
She got off the train and went to the taxi rank.
